#NaPoWriMo2026 #Day8 #RepeatedPhraseThatContradicts #ButI'mNoConservationist

But I’m no conservationist.

I say it like a disclaimer,
that it’s not my training,
like I’m a stick of rock
that in my middle says “Yoof Worker”.

But I’m no conservationist.

The choughs circling the cliffs
seem to have missed the memo.
Dovorian’s young and old name me:
pom-pom maker,
shield matron, with a key to colours and beasts
Chough Lady.

But I’m no conservationist.

Even as I’m out there again,
tramping the world's blue seams,
knowing rivers that giggle,
lakes placidly hush,
oceans dream slowly,
ponds hold the moon like a secret.
Anything wet, really,
anything bigger than a puddle,
and suddenly I’m ankle-deep in devotion.

But I’m no conservationist.

I keep tasting the world,
believing every day’s a school day:
the salt on my lips,
the moss-green hush of a bank,
watching the sky for familiar feathers
chough wings brushing
the edges of my noticing.
I’m cataloguing textures with my fingertips,
listening to the soft grammar of leaves,
letting the wind rewrite me.

But I’m no conservationist.

I insist, while organising communities
like someone gathering fallen twigs
to build a fire worth standing around.
My knowledge bank grows feral,
sprouting facts and stories
like seedlings that refuse to stay in their pots.
People keep handing me questions
if I don’t know the answers,
I help plant them in other fertile soil.

But I’m no conservationist.

I repeat, as if repetition could make it true
as if the choughs weren’t circling overhead,
as if my boots weren’t already muddy,
as if my heart weren’t quietly
rewilding itself, every time I step outside.

#NaPoWriMo2025 #Day8 #GhazalForLu

Ghazal for Lu

From the pages of a fantasy novel, I fell into your arms,
You were powerless to resist my ample charms.

Through every storm, your hearts been my shore,
A safe harbour, where I feel loved evermore.

You drive me everywhere but never up the bend,
You're always happy to help out our friends.

You brought us together when Covid stalked the land,
Three generations now under a lantern roof that's quite grand.

You've always grounded me in all the right ways,
Devoted your wifelet will remain all her days.

#NaPoWriMo #Day8 #Ghosting

Ghosting

I would have

had this end differently;

a reconciliation or

at least a tumultuous explosion

that lit up  the sky

rather than the pitiful

indoor fireworks,

a disappointing pop, puff of acrid smoke.

It fizzled out uninspiringly

a pale shade ghosting,

hidden under

lightly used bedsheets

an extroverted people pleaser

an introvert gasping

for the middle ring.

Maybe it was doomed

to fail, but do I regret

our paths co-joining?

No, I’ve enjoyed

meandering a few turns

around the wheel,

the people we spoke to,

lessons we learned, not least

how not to uncouple.

#napowrimo2022 #day8 #shortismysuperpower

Short is my superpower

My students dubbed me
SMOL (small and adorable),
short is my superpower.

Don’t call on me for painting ceilings,
but skirting boards, I’m your gal,
no back-breaking but a great bum shuffle.

When I am the grateful recipient of a lift
I require no seat adjustment,
look I have acres of room.

At concerts I am pushed to the front,
hold my hand I’ll take you with me,
dodge and weave, thank you, thank you.

Paying adult prices for adult shoes?
I don’t think so and by happy chance,
I love unicorns, rainbows, and butterflies.

Should we get intimate, close, and cosy,
you bet I make a great little spoon,
I warn you now though I snore, and hog covers.

It’s often been said, great things come
in small packages (like arsenic)
I will always lend a hand with irksome issues.

#shade #NaPoWriMo2021#day8

Shade

You might think
crossing over, entering
the universal consciousness
would bring you closer to
the allignment of love.
Apparently not!

I still consel young women,
not to put too much faith
in men. "We've all got one
arsehole in our knickers.
Don't rush to add another one".
Grave dirt dished.

Offering sage advice.
I think things do become
A little clearer
this side of the veil.
I can see my own truisms.
I can see my own lies

Depression did for me.
I believed those toxic,
brain weasels. Telling me
the world was better off
without me in it.
It felt real at the time.

Bastard hindsight is 20/20.
I knew when they couldn't
close the doors of the chapel
how loved I was.
Friends, family, teapot tribe,
all filed in, but not all had seats.

I don't sleep, under a hill.
I witness rock bottoms.
I prompt phone a sponsor.
I urge find a meeting
So it's not all in vain.
As a shade I shine solace.
