Nettle's Whisper

1

There is a green fire in nettle at twilight

It hums like a thought that stings and soothes the same.

You must be still to hear what it is singing.

It sings of love, but not by any known name.

“I want to be with you everywhere,” it says.

“I want to be with you everywhere,” it stays.

2

The roots hold secrets older than our speaking.

We walk above them, never thinking to ask.

Still, something brushes back through skin and shadow

The spirit behind the nettle lifts her mask.

“I want to be with you everywhere,” she says.

“I want to be with you everywhere,” she stays.

3

Not all things soft are kind; not all pain is cruel.

To love like nettle is to risk being known.

To touch, to sting, to heal with steady presence

To find a place where even thorns have grown.

“I want to be with you everywhere,” they say.

“I want to be with you everywhere,” they stay.

#NaPoWriMo2024 #day13 #psalms63:10

Psalms 63:10

Bought a cheap laptop
to listen to some doowop
sloshing down my adult juice
to get myself a little loose
count each expired breath
another step closer to death
every night asleep in bed
is a “practice run” he said
vampires hate garlic
no stakes use a toothpick
serpent tempts eve with apple
(that’s what I heard in chapel)
I have read the good book
inconsistencies for those who look
wise men sans car
travelled guided my a star
church parades I attend
drive me slightly round the bend
I would be less annoyed
If foxes portions they’d avoid

#napowrimo2022 #day13 #13luckyforsome

Inspired by the Nonet, trying a poem with 13 syllables and then dropping one of each line.

"13 Lucky for Some"

Himself suggested a trip to Buckingham Palace.
Okay, if you like says I. Heaven knows that were
not really monarchists, but marriage is about
compromise. We might see the Changing of
the Guards, we sit beneath a cherry tree,
blossom falling round our faces,
surprise, he pulls two tickets,
out, reveals a “Wicked”
treat, completes a
musical
hat trick.
Squee!

Unexpected news…truth broke out.

Every day I read

bad news, my heart it

broke, so I choose to

stop reading print, no red top

rags or broadsheet columns scanned.

Every day I read

 fake news, my heart it

broke, so I choose to

stop mindless scrolling, on

social media, ignoring trolls.

Unexpectedly truth

broke out, usually

lies have run halfway.

around the globe before the

truth has got her pants on.

Today’s prompt comes from the Instagram account of Sundress Publications, which posts a writing prompt every day, all year long. This one is short and sweet: write a poem in the form of a news article you wish would come out tomorrow.

Added a little nod to Terry Pratchett
